Starting a New Chapter Means Letting Go of the Old One

Starting a New Chapter Means Letting Go of the Old One

We love the idea of new beginnings.

A fresh start. A different life. Something new waiting for us on the other side.

But we don't always talk about what a new beginning requires.

Sometimes starting a new chapter means having the courage to close the old one.

Some years ago, I was going through so much pain that there were moments I honestly couldn't see the end of it. I couldn't imagine life feeling different. When you're hurting deeply, tomorrow can feel like nothing more than an extension of today.

Pain does that. It narrows your vision.

You replay what happened. You grieve what was lost. You wonder what you could have done differently. And without realizing it, you can become so connected to yesterday that you stop fully living today.

What I eventually learned changed something in me:

The present gave me something the past couldn't: hope and purpose.

When we continually live in the past, it's difficult to have either. We're looking backward at what we cannot change instead of forward at what might still be possible.

Living in the present doesn't mean the past suddenly stops hurting. It doesn't mean pretending it didn't matter or forcing yourself to "move on."

It means allowing yourself to believe that your life is bigger than what happened to you.

It means waking up and asking:

What is still possible today?

Who am I becoming through this?

Where is God meeting me right now?

I learned that starting a new chapter isn't always some dramatic moment when everything suddenly changes. Sometimes it happens quietly.

It's the moment you stop asking the past to give you a different ending.

It's the moment you realize you can carry the wisdom without continuing to carry all the weight.

It's the moment you become willing to turn the page, even when you don't yet know what's written on the next one.

You don't have to hate the old chapter to close it. You can honor what mattered, grieve what was lost, learn from what hurt—and still choose to move forward.

Take the wisdom. Keep the lessons. Release what no longer belongs.

Because sometimes letting go isn't about losing something.

It's finally making room for what God is bringing next.
