The start of each New Year is a time when many people typically set New Year’s resolutions. While these resolutions may involve a myriad of efforts many are typically related to health and wellness. It is quite common to hear of people who have made a New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, quit smoking, etc. Unfortunately most people do not succeed with their resolutions.
The word resolution is oftentimes defined as; a firm decision to do or not do something. Its synonyms include intention, resolve, decision, intent, and plan.
I do not personally believe in making resolutions but because many people do, I would like to address why resolutions typically fail and provide a unique and effective approach that can be taken to improve our success in committing to and setting and accomplishing goals and objectives to achieve lasting lifestyle or behavioral change and to living authentically.
Volumes have been written about lifestyle change and resolutions so that is not my focus for this article. My focus for this blog is more the motivation behind resolutions or even goals and objectives for that matter and from a high level perspective.
To illustrate my point on the failure of many resolutions, let’s use weight loss, as that is a quite common New Year’s resolution. It is a well-known fact that many people fail in their resolution to lose weight. But, why? Why do people wish to lose weight or accomplish other resolutions they might make? I believe that failure oftentimes comes from a faulty motivation.
I believe that in order to achieve resolutions or goals, one must have the proper motivation. My belief is there is nothing more important than living a life of authenticity because by living this way, we benefit from living a fulfilling and meaningful life that positively enhances our relationship with others and the world.
JTAL believes living authentically can be challenging, but the benefits are worth the effort. It requires the courage to ask yourself the hard questions and to be completely honest with yourself about what is truly important to you in life, and how you can live your “human excellence” as Aristotle often referred to it.
At JTAL, we believe that each person has the potential to evolve to greater self-awareness regardless of where they are emotionally, spiritually, psychologically and geographically.
We believe that the value of living an authentic and abundant life is to help individuals increase self-awareness and eliminate or mitigate impediments to living a rewarding and fulfilling life.
For example, there is a marked difference in a resolution to lose weight and the motivation behind that, oftentimes extrinsic an unauthentic, versus a commitment to try to live a more authentic life and the motivation behind that which is intrinsic.
Regardless of your circumstances and resolutions/goals, you have the potential to truly follow your heart’s wisdom, live YOUR truth, and be real in every sense: The very essence of human flourishing and achievement! This I believe is the key to increasing success in achieving whatever goals you may set.
I hope this blog will favorably influence you to rethink the motivation (s) behind your resolutions and consider embarking on the Journey to more authentic living.
Wishing you All A Great and Prosperous 2017!
