Good Conversation Doesn't Deserve Access

Good Conversation Doesn't Deserve Access

One lesson I've learned is this: just because someone can hold a deep conversation doesn't mean they get access to my life.

Good conversation isn't the same as genuine connection.

Some people are incredibly articulate. They're intelligent, engaging, and can talk for hours about life, relationships, faith, business, or personal growth. But eventually I've learned to ask myself a different question:

Are they just talking...or are they genuinely curious?

One of the ways I can tell someone is sincerely interested is by whether they ask for my insight or opinion. And more importantly, whether they actually engage with it.

If someone asks what I think, only to immediately change the subject, redirect the conversation back to themselves, or repeatedly overlook my perspective, I begin to lose interest.

Not because I need agreement.

Not because I need validation.

But because I value reciprocity.

Curiosity tells me a lot about a person.

It tells me they're humble enough to acknowledge they don't know everything.

It tells me they value another perspective instead of simply waiting for their turn to speak.

It tells me they're interested in understanding—not just being heard.

That's emotional maturity.

Here are my thoughts for you: stop confusing intensity with alignment. Stop auditioning for proximity.

I've stopped believing that just because a conversation feels intellectually stimulating, it automatically deserves another invitation into my life.

Chemistry is easy.

Compatibility is earned.

Shared values. Mutual curiosity. Reciprocity. Emotional maturity.

Those are the qualities that build relationships worth investing in.

I've learned that not everyone who fascinates me belongs in my inner circle.

And that's not judgment.

That's discernment.

Protect your peace. Guard your attention. And remember—good conversation may open a door, but mutual curiosity is what determines who gets invited in.
