Demands of Being Self-Employed

Being self-employed is not any way near as glamorous as many people imagine it to be. There are significant personal sacrifices one has to make on a frequent basis in order to remain focused on essential issues and challenges and to increase one’s potential for success, regardless of the amount of resources one might have.

Moreover, I have learned from my husband and biz partner, as well as other successful business entrepreneurs, that your potential for success is substantially increased when you have a genuine passion and love for the work you do.  It is absolutely essential you understand the importance of your business as compared to the other priorities in your life and be able to achieve the proper work-life balance.  Success in business, more than anything requires persistence that is influenced, arguably, more than anything else by your love and passion for what you do.  Consider the following quote by Calvin Coolidge. “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

We live in a world that is in a constant and ever changing state of flux requiring us to frequently revisit what our priorities are and the impact of our decisions on all of our other priorities.

As Greg McKeon says in his book “Essentialism: you can do anything but you can’t do everything”. We have constant demands on our time. People and events are constantly vying for our time and attention. And, we must be able to accept we cannot realistically devote the same degree of focus and attention to every demand.

Authentic living applies to every aspect of our lives, especially our work, as it typically requires more of our time than any other singular activity.  If you are an entrepreneur or aspiring business owner, I invite you to give serious consideration to your love and passion for what you are doing or wish to do and how it will affect your ability to live a rewarding and fulfilling life!  Be persistent in your pursuit of authentic living!
